    Music and art of Thailand.

Thailand has been a country rich in cultural heritage, art and music for hundreds of years. Like many regions in Southeast Asia, Indian religion and culture heavily influenced Thailand. However, unlike other Southeast Asian nations and despite European pressure, Thailand has never been colonized. Therefore, Thailand has maintained a sense of originality in its history and culture. You can see some images of Thai culture on travel specials, available through certain packages at directspecialtv.com.

    Music

Thai people love music, and Thailand’s music scene thrives as a result. While much of Thai’s modern music shows clear influence by Western music culture, particularly when it comes to the pop and rock genres, some music is distinctly Thai.

Classical Thai music originated in royal courts and has remained relatively unchanged for over eight-hundred years. The ranat ek, a Thai xylophone, is arguably the most recognizable instrument used in classical Thai music. Twenty-two thin bars carved from rosewood or bamboo rest on soft cords over a miniaturized river boat that serves as the resonator. Two mallets create soft and sharp sounds that serve as the centerpiece of many classical songs.

Cymbals, chimes, drums, and other percussion instruments typically accompany the ranat ek. Depending on the subgenre of classical music, string and woodwind instruments may accompany the ranat ek as well. This collection of distinctive instruments can typically be found at classical dancing shows.

    Art

The vast majority of traditional Thai art features the Buddha and Buddhist imagery. While some traditional Thai art features depictions of everyday life, there are still Buddhist undertones in most of these scenes, and most paintings depicted episodes from the life of the Buddha. Traditional Thai paintings were very flat in appearance, with each character sized according to its importance.

In modern-day Thai culture, Thai artists no longer express themselves solely through paintings and the ornamentation of temples and palaces. Thailand’s contemporary art is just as diverse as art found in Western cultures, and art is rarely censored due to Thailand’s liberal nature. However, Thailand is still almost entirely Buddhist, and the Buddha and Buddhist ideology are still focal points of many modern Thai works.
